Highlights of the USDA Cattle on Feed Report

6/20/2008

Cattle on Feed:  Cattle on feed June 1, for the 12 state, totaled 10.8 million head on feed, 4% below last year and 3% below June 2006.

Texas reported 2.69 million head on feed June 1, 6% below 2006.  Nebraska reported 2.25 million head on feed, 2% below last year.  Kansas reported 2.19 million head on feed, 4% below last year.  Colorado reported 920,000 head on feed, 10% below last year.

Placements in May totaled 1.90 million head: 12% below last year, and just slightly below 2006.  Placements for May were as follows, Texas 560,000 head, 21% below last year.  Nebraska placed 370,000 head, 5% below last year. Kansas placed 410,000 head, 12% below last year. Colorado placed 150,000 head, 14% below last year.

The weight breakdown on placements is as follows:

600# and under……… 340,000 head, down 80,000 head from last year, a 19% decrease

600-699#....................350,000 head, down 24,000 head from last year, a 6% decrease.

700-799#.................564,000 head, down 81,000 head from last year, a 13% decrease.

800# plus…………645,000 head, down 75,000 head from last year, a 10% decrease.

Marketings of Fed Cattle:  totaled 2.14 million head, 3% above 2007, and 1% below 2006.  Texas sold 550,000 head, 8% above last year.  Nebraska sold 480,000 head, 4% below last year.  Kansas sold 490,000 head, 2% below last year.  Colorado sold 170,000 head of cattle, 10% above last year.
